There's long been a generally-accepted designated successor for Linus 
(currently Andrew Morton as has already been noted but it was once Alan 
Cox).

For a long time I've wanted Linus T to be more formal about this but 
having read LKML on and off for nearly 20 years I've concluded he thinks 
about DR, backups and business continuity a lot less than I do.  I suppose 
he has a kernel to develop or something :)
