It must not be terribly difficult to do since Rolls Royce (I think?) 
already build engine status tracking reporting back to them for 
on-going evaluation of engine performance in case of a need for later 
re-engineering. So there are zero comms problems with this idea. The 
issue with this flight was that pilots had the ability to turn off 
the ones they knew about which provided the type of data that would 
have helped locating them. Instead, they went off the grid during 
flight, requiring second or third order data sources ('life' pings).
