It would be quite easy to buy gear online that does not meet the Australian
standards that make spectrum sharing work, ie, by limiting wifi power,
channel crosstalk and junk on non-wifi frequencies.  There are cheap
repeaters available that meet AU standards, so you don't have to buy from
the ISPs.

This problem could be caused by some crappy networking gear:
