Can any Linker explain how quantum computing (QC) is actually supposed to work?

I think I understand the relevant physics reasonably well without being any expert.  Claims to have demonstrated simple QC have been made, but last time I looked there was some doubt about how much of the result was due to the external QC device and how much to the front-end computer.

There's even a commercial product from a company known as D-Wave Systems who I thought had constructed a QC chip some time ago - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-Wave_Systems

But there's obviously a lot of effort being put into the subject, including through a CRC network in Australia of which UNSW is a part.  Maybe I should just do some more reading...
