If you read the comments attached to various media reports there are 
multiple examples where a physical passport is the only real solution.

Most of them start with the observation that there are many more places 
than an airport when you need to prove who you are.

e.g. On the border between any two African counties. In the mountains of 
Pakistan or Afghanistan. On the streets of many a city where you can 
lawfully be asked to provide your ID.

IMHO it's a bunch of techos with limited real world experience who 
haven't (and/or are incapable of) thinking it through.
