That, i.e. fork, appears to me to have been done quite a while ago,
resulting in the "Pale Moon" browser.
https://www.palemoon.org/
But, as the Pale Moon lead developer explains, it's not just a simple
rebuild of Firefox:
"Addressing a few hot topics and general misconceptions"
http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4564
Among other things, it doesn't have Mozilla-like "suggested tiles"
[advert], nor the Mozilla dumbed-down "Australis" GUI, etc, etc.
Overall, imo, its much more focussed on individual end-user configurability
and preferences, rather than trying to force a 'one-size-fits-all' attitude
that seems to have taken over browser names such as Mozilla/Firefox and
Opera (and has imo even longer been the case with MS IE).
I'm under the impression that a lot of what Mozilla has done to the Firefox
browser in recent years, that can loosely be regarded as non-user-friendly,
can be 'undone' by installing various extensions, etc. What I like about
Pale Moon is that it doesn't have such "anti-user" aspects installed in
first place, so I don't "have to" spend time figuring out how to disable,
change, or block, them.
