[LINK] Poor tech means we are losing youth to the cities

The latest chapter in the story of young people abandoning the regions
because of poor services and lack of opportunity. This time, it's
telecommunications.

Turn that around, however. What are the opportunities in spending on
telecommunications? Not only keeping people in the regions, but
attracting them from the cities.

Is it all that massive? Our forebears managed to get copper into some
remarkably remote locations; today's politicians seem to be saying that
we can't do the same with fibre. Admittedly, we have a lot of catching
up to do. We did start screwing up in the 1980s, after all. Is the value
of fixing the stuff-up worth investing, say, $100 billion to kick-start
the repair job?

Our forebears began with picks, shovels and horses. We have machinery
that makes the job comparatively easy. They forged their way into
relatively untracked lands. Our paths are well-travelled. When did we
become such puerile, pusillanimous pipsqueaks?
