And then of course there are the many options within each standard and protocol, and the many ambiguities and vaguenesses, and the many versions.
In even modestly diverse contexts, intermediation involves handling very large numbers of exceptions, 'legacy' arrangements, erroneous input arising from low-quality implementations, etc.
In a generic scheme, multiply the complexity by n, where n isn't small.
