The very likely was a DOS attack, they are rampant and effect every web
host with any profile. But they are not magical, they are just a ramp up of
traffic with a effect similar to what peak hour does to a road system. It
isn't some catastrophic attack that damages systems requiring repair or
something.
The real questions are why were no readily available counter measures in
place, why did the site get taken off-line and why did it take two
days(!!!) to restore it.
There was a major failing here, but it isn't clear yet what it was. Suffice
to say there are plenty of high profile web sites in Australia that face
the same environment without multi-day outages.
