Yes, accident statistics are no solution.

I think the extent to which people feel they can _responsibly_ assess & manage different levels of risk is the main factor.  The problem with driverless cars is that drivers have absolutely no way of assessing or managing risk at any given time or situation, and therefore responsibility is taken away completely.  And the weighted risk is very high because it potentially involves the lives of everyone in the car and other parties.

I submit that this fear is entirely reasonable.
