Some of the radio 'phone towers seem to have been around so long that at 
least one could be heritage listed! :)

The old HCRC network apparently provided "approximately 17,000 
individual services to 9000 customers" in 2012.

An old research paper puts the number on DRCS (which preceded HCRC) in 
1987 at about 10,000.

It looks like current figures might be "Commercial in Confidence", but 
an unnamed source says about 27,000 on Telstra's proprietary NGWL.

So, steadily-rising numbers relying on infrastructure so old that at 
least some of it qualifies for Heritage Listing. :/
