Thanks Kim, this is a very good article.  I didn't know about the MIT Technology Review either; it seems like an interesting journal and was founded at MIT in 1899.

I also enjoyed pursuing Stephen's link to the piece about the Earth's changing magnetic field.  It seems Mars once had deep oceans of water, but these evaporated because its' atmosphere was blasted into space by solar winds after it lost its' own field.  But relax, that's not expected to happen here, and we have enough things to worry about!!
