At the risk of repeating meself, there is an alternative solution with very low overhead, superfast at the
application level, but perhaps not for the faint of heart:

The idea is so simple I should have thought of it myself. I've been using it on laptops and desktops for
years.

Dunno how difficult it is to replace the hosts file on hand-held devices, although there is, for example,
a fix on Android. Requires jailbreaking, like all the fixes I found:
