...and the quality of your modem, which of course is related to its' cost.  Some modems allow the SNR (signal-to-noise-ratio) margin to be adjusted, which improves error-rate but decreases throughput.

The other big problem with FTTN, as I've remarked before, is that there's no clear point where NBN Co's responsibility for finding & fixing faults ends and that of the ISP and/or the hapless customer begins.  This can lead to finger-pointing and the customer being charged ~$300.
