Yes, it is outrageous using mobile phones to track students on campus.
What is wrong with good old fashioned facial recognition from
surveillance cameras in every room? ;-)
More seriously, apart from the privacy issues, I am not sure how
educationally useful this is. Knowing where the student is does not
provide much help in diagnosing learning difficulties.
Students can receive educational materials on their phone, work with
other students and do a quiz on a phone, which is more useful than
checking if they are on campus. In the past, learning material for the
phone had to be specially designed. But now Learning Management Systems
are compatible with smart phones.
