I thoroughly agree with the sentiment.  But we did privatise telecommunications, so isn't it up to the telcos to plan & pay for these disasters?  Or are we going down the usual conservative path of privatising the profits and socialising the losses?

There's a trade-off between performance and vulnerability too.  An "intelligent pole" offering 5G every 100 metres or so doesn't look so good in a bushfire-prone area.
