Hi there,
It was funny to see it play out.
First, the PM declares an humongous cyber threat to Australia. That
was last week. No names mentioned. Then ASPI, a "think tank" funded by
the Federal Government and, yes "and", foreign weapons manufacturers
bobs out of the blue and pings China as the culprit.
Then yesterday, the stenographers in the mainstream media follow up
their cyber threat scoop with this week's big story of a $270 billion
Defence spend. That's about the size of the entire Covid stimulus.
The media types it up. As Australian government fuses ever more
tightly with military industrial multinationals, we investigate ASPI.
Also some excellent work on the environment minister approving
Whitehaven's 10th coal mine - despite strident opposition from
environmentalists and farmers. A powerful debunking too of the
"clean coal" energy push by Tim Buckley. It doesn't stack up
financially, let alone environmentally.
Check out the latest from Revolving Doors [3] in gaming and Defence
and the relaunch of QED, the case for a Federal ICAC. We are
publishing a rort a day on social media, and there are so many rorts -
most buried, deflected, uninvestigated, unprosecuted and left to
fester and further undermine the public's confidence in democracy -
that we will be going for weeks!
Thanks for your support!

ENVIRONMENT MINISTER APPROVES WHITEHAVEN’S TENTH COAL MINE [4]
by Callum Foote The state's 52nd coal mine, and the first since
Covid, has been approved by the Minister for the Environment in NSW
amid plunging coal prices and huge local opposition. The fate of
Whitehaven's Vickery mine, and its impact on farmers around Narrabri,
now lies in the hands of the NSW's independent planning commissioners

“INDEPENDENT” THINK-TANK ASPI BEHIND PUSH FOR MORE DEFENCE
SPENDING RAKES IN ADVISORY FEES [6]
by Marcus Reubenstein Funded by the Department of Defence, the
Australia Strategic Policy Institute collects millions more as it
drives the "China threat" narrative. As Marcus Reubenstein reports,
while ASPI is the media's go-to experts for public comment, ASPI is
remarkably coy about revealing all its funding sources.

WILFUL IGNORANCE OF FACTS ON CHINESE INVESTMENT IS CHEAP POLITICS [8]
by James Laurenceson Fears of China buying up the country run deep,
with opportunistic politicians and commentators long showing a
willingness to not let "facts" get in the way of the truth. And the
facts are that: China's land interests are predominantly leasehold, it
owns just 2% of foreign investment stock and is subject to a much
lower threshold test. With the Australia-China relationship at a low
ebb, it is time to call out this destructive tactic, writes James
Laurenceson.

REVISITING FAILED CLIMATE STRATEGY OF CCS RENDERS INVESTORS SPEECHLESS
[10]
by Clark Butler Carbon capture and storage, the prohibitively
expensive climate mitigation strategy, is back on the Coalition's
agenda. Yet the facts speak for themselves. Of Shell’s total
emissions of 656 million tonnes a year, its two CCS plants remove just
5 million tonnes a year from the atmosphere; the few plants in the
world only exist because of huge government subsidies; while European
oil companies use CCS primarily as a "feel-good" marketing message.
Tim Buckley reports.

VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT WINS BIG ON CARBON REVOLUTION FLOAT BY TAKING
PUNTERS FOR A RIDE [12]
by Anthony Klan The Andrews Labor government pumped $275 million
into the long-failing, high-end wheel maker to help it limp across the
line to an ASX listing last year. The float was a bonanza for it and a
handful of other “existing investors” including the Clean Energy
Finance Corporation. But the stock exchange was so concerned about the
vast gains being made that it placed a freeze over all 5.4 million
shares the state government ended up with after the float, writes
Anthony Klan in Part II of his investigation into Carbon Revolution.

LAUNCHING QED: THE CASE FOR A FEDERAL ICAC [14]
by Michael West Before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, trust in government
had reached its lowest level on record, according to a major study
conducted by The Australian National University. Just 25% of
Australians said they had confidence in their political leaders and
institutions.
