It has irritated me for many a moon that clubs (RSL clubs, sporting
clubs etc) require me to produce a drivers licence to enter and use
their facilities. It irritates me even more that they scan and
apparently store the front face of my licence.
I found this page recently, which I though was exactly what I needed:
https://privacy.org.au/policies/club-id-scans/
... until I read it's suggestion that I "out" an offending club on my
Myspace page...
That gave me pause and caused me to suppose that these details may not
be as up-to-date as a crusade on my part might require.
So - what is the current situation regarding clubs demanding and/or
storing identification details? The huge amount of technology and
investment in same around collecting identity information from patrons
suggest all on its own that it is not illegal.
For what it's worth, I have yet to receive a single spam (postal,
electronic or otherwise) from the one club in my area that I visit
occasionally but am not a member of and which certainly has my details.
Which raises the faintest flicker of hope that the details are actually
discarded after some reasonable period of time - possibly 30 days, as
that is the length of time "temporary memberships" are valid for.
Without wishing to offend, it would be good to hear from those who KNOW
rather than from those who merely suppose, assume, or hope...
Pointers to reliable information also very welcome.
Regards, K.
