And it is soooo nice to be in a place with next to no ads, using
software that is designed to let you tune in to what you do want and
tune out of what you don't, that doesn't foist stuff on you that you
never asked for, and that doesn't run on confected outrage.
People do self-promote, but it's people, so it's usually actually
interesting - artists of various stripes, that sort of thing. It is
trivially easy to filter, mute or even block people or entire servers
if you don't like them, so while I have seen some outright commercial
stuff, it's been done very sparingly and veeerrry carefully, because it
is just so easy for people to say "nope".
So far, I've been very happy with Mastodon. I'm sure there are storms
ahead, but it is distributed and open. The latter means people can and
will try to subvert it, but the former means that other people can
counteract such things, and generally speaking bad actors are made
invisible ("defederated") quicker than you can blink.
Heartily recommended if you are interested in generally civilised
social discourse.
