Perhaps this is a case of familiarity breeding contempt.  The folks living within 50 miles of Three Mile Island preceding the accident there probably had no concerns either.

In any case, Australia does not have an established nuclear power industry so we'd be completely dependent on overseas expertise for know-how, supply & installation of the nuclear plants, ongoing maintenance of them, reprocessing of spent fuel rods, supply of new fuel, etc.

This is NOT a good strategic position in a highly unstable world.  Only recently the Ukraine was (and still is) worried about a Russian attack on a plant there just as a war-fighting tactic.
