Dear Colleagues
Sorry for the lengthy delay. I have been changing jobs and busy with
finishing other things off.
I have now created a database application to edit and write the web site for
the revision of the Mihalic dictionary. I
invite you to look again at
http://coombs.anu.edu.au/SpecialProj/PNG/MIHALIC/Index.htm
As you will see, there are approximately the same number of entries as
before. The difference is that I had coded the previous lot by hand, but now
any changes I make to the database (see 'how this works' on the intro page)
are automatically reflected in changes to the web pages, including
cross-references.
I expect to begin whittling away at the entries now, and let's discuss on
the list as we go. MAF at Mt Hagen appear to be volunteering to type up the
old edition (are you there MAF??) which would be very helpful indeed. At the
moment only some pages have links to their original entries (where there
were original entries).
In the mean time, a question. What language does 'mama' come from. My
Shorter OED says English 1579, reduplication of infantile utterance 'ma'.
Rubbish!
How good's anyone's Latin or Old French?
Regards
John Burton
