masalai etymology

Had a question from a UK anthropologist about the etymology of masalai. He
wanted to know if the original was specifically New Ireland or if it the
word has cognates in languages outside New Ireland. If so, how much further
afield?

There is certainly an almost identical word in the Nalik language of New
Ireland.
