I agree with Don. "As' is just the bottom, or the fundamental part, or the
beginning. In the phrase 'as bilong sospen' it just means the bottom of the
saucepan. 'As' is used similarly in many phrases - e.g. 'as bilong diwai',
the base of the tree; 'as bilong trabel', the source of the trouble.
Nothing to do with black arses. And I would be very surprised indeed if
cannibalism is still practised anywhere in PNG in 2003.
