John,
You had a posting about a month ago about the Tok Pisin dictionary being put out
by Oxford University Press. I think Ray O’Farrell, the Oxford University
Press rep for PNG, has already contacted you about it, but it's probably a good
idea to let the whole list know where it's at.
I've been helping Ray to edit what a number of contributors have put together.
It is a much less ambitious project than the Mihalic dictionary. It does not
aim to be as inclusive and has a more restricted audience, students coming out
of the Tok Pisin elementary schools. Actually, rather than as competition for
the Mihalic dictionary, I see it more as an appetiser for the main course.
In your posting you were quite right in saying “we should watch out for
material
lifted from the M71 or from our website”. Since I have worked with both
projects, I wanted to make sure that didn’t happen. There were actually a
lot of German-derived entries that seemed to be pretty close to M71 entries, so
these were eliminated.
I think Ray has said he would send you galley proofs. Please do let him and me
both know if you see anything that looks too close to a Mihalic entry.
Craig Volker
