"Tok Pisin dictionary launched" _By ZARA KANU_

*TOK Pisin is one of our national languages so Papua New Guineans must
read it to fully understand how and what the language communicates,
Governor-General Sir Paulius Matane said.*
Speaking at the launching of the Oxford Papua New Guinea Tok Pisin
English dictionary, this is a language that the people have developed
over the last 150 years as a means of communicating among themselves,
irrespective of their ethnical background and their native tongue".
PNG's only Tok Pisin publication Wantok Niuspepa has over the years
worked closely with Oxford University Press and reputed Tok Pisin
academics and practitioners to compile and edit this dictionary, which
can act as an ideal tool for Tok Pisin speakers intending to strengthen
their proficiency in English and vice-versa.
Sir Paulius said that in everyday life for young and old Tok Pisin is
the language of choice, he said.
Tok Pisin together with Hiri Motu and English
are listed as the three official languages in the Constitution of PNG.
The Oxford University Press representative Ray O'Farrell said "it took
almost seven years to complete the piecing together of the dictionary.
"Tok Pisin like any other language is a living and vibrant language and
the dictionary should reflect that," he said.
He said there are more editions to come with this being the first real
researched dictionary.
The dictionaries are currently selling for K38 and special prices go to
individuals and organisations intending to buy in bulk.
