[Dr Taylor has passed on this note from Christian Coseru, a former postgraduate
student of the Faculty, who now teaches in Charleston. --Greg]

Well, I have finally come to the end of my first academic year here at
the College of Charleston. The second semester has been a lot easier
than the first, partly because I was more settled and partly because I
had a great group of students in my two classes on Asian Philosophy and
Philosophy of Religion. Teaching the Asian Philosophy class, the first
ever at the College, had been extremely rewarding. I felt that more than
a decade of dedicated research had finally bore fruit.

Otherwise, life here in the beautiful Charleston, at the edges of the
Lowcountry, has been full of surprises and adventure. I feel fortunate
to have joined a wonderful philosophy department and become part of a
teaching tradition going back more than two centuries. Charleston and
the College go back to colonial times and retain much of the original
architecture, with grandiose mansions built at the height of the
Southern economic boom in the late 18th century. Located right in the
heart of historical Charleston and surrounded by secular oak trees
draped in Spanish moss, the College has perhaps one of the most
beautiful antebellum campuses in North America.

Parts of Charleston remind me of West London or of quaint English towns
like Harrogate. I still miss Canberra and old friends, and hope to be
able to return in the not so distant future.

Keep in touch,
Christian
