2015 Pacific Research Colloquium - Applications now open
26 January - 6 February, 2015
Australian National University, Canberra
Hosted by the State, Society & Governance in Melanesia Program
Each year, the State Society and Governance in Melanesia program (SSGM) at the Australian National University hosts the Pacific Research Colloquium - an event that brings early career researchers from the Pacific - including Papua and Timor-Leste - to Canberra for 2 weeks of intensive research skills development work.
We are offering a limited number of scholarships to early-career researchers from the Pacific to participate in the 2015 Pacific Research Colloquium in Canberra, which will take place from 26 January to 6 February 2015. Participants will develop research skills by working with some of the top Pacific studies scholars in Australia.
To apply for a scholarship you need to:
- Be currently undertaking social science research;
- Be doing research on, or applicable to, the Pacific;
- Hold a passport & be eligible for an Australian visa.
You do not need to be a university graduate to apply.
Each scholarship provides payment of full travel costs to and from Canberra plus accommodation and living expenses for the duration of the stay.
Early-career Australian and New Zealand researchers doing social science research in relation to the Pacific, Papua or Timor-Leste may also apply to attend the Pacific Research Colloquium on a self-funded basis.
Social science research fields include anthropology, development studies, political science or public administration, gender studies, geography, sociology, Pacific Studies, public health, or law.
In 2015, the program will include:
- Intensive training on designing, conducting, and writing reports on, research projects
- SSGM and other ANU scholars providing mentoring and feedback on your research projects and papers
- Guided introductions to research resources
- Visit to Parliament, and social events
To encourage high standard work, SSGM will also offer a separate four week visiting fellowship to the participant who authors the best paper. The recipient of this fellowship will have the opportunity to present at SSGM's flagship event - the State of the Pacific conference.
SSGM also offers all Colloquium participants ongoing mentoring as they develop their research projects and write up their papers after the Colloquium. Opportunities to submit papers for publication as SSGM Discussion Papers will also be available to participate.

Deadline for applications is Sunday, 24 August 2014
Successful Applicants will be notified by 15 September 2014. They will then be required to submit a full first draft paper by 3 November 2014. Final award of the Scholarship will depend on SSGM receiving the draft paper by the due date. We will send mentor's comments on the first draft. Then we will require a second draft of the paper, taking account of the mentor's comments, to be sent to us by a date (to be advised) in January 2015. Air travel tickets will not be provided until we receive that second draft.
