2014 Pacific Research Colloquium

28 January – 7 February 2014
Hedley Bull Centre (130), Garran Road
The Australian National University, Canberra
Convenor: Anthony Regan

About the PRC
The State, Society & Governance in Melanesia Program at the Australian National University conducts the Pacific Research Colloquium (PRC) each year as part of efforts to support the development of research skills amongst early career Pacific researchers. This is possible because of funding support from the Australian Government through the aid program. We usually bring between 20 and 25 such researchers to Canberra for this two week event.

The first week of the PRC involves an introduction to research methodology. During the second week, each of the visiting participants gives a presentation on their research. The visiting participants also submit a 6000 word paper on their research, and the author of the best research paper is invited back to Canberra later in the year to present at SSGM’s annual State of the Pacific Conference.

This year SSGM has offered awards to 19 participants from 7 Pacific countries (including Timor Leste) and 1 from Indonesia (Papua). They have been selected from about 500 applicants. This group will be joined by five researchers (three from PNG and two from Solomon Islands) who are designing a joint SSGM/IWDA research project, and several PhD candidates who have recently commenced study with SSGM.

Innovations
This year SSGM is taking steps towards preparing a handbook on research methodology for those undertaking social science research in the Pacific islands. We aim to have the handbook ready for use in 2015. Along with the PRC itself, the proposed Handbook is part of SSGM’s contribution towards building social science research capacity in the region.

Invitation to Participate
Week one of the program is generally closed to participants only, as content delivered during this week is designed for their capacity building purposes. Week two of the program, where participants give presentations on their research is open to interested audiences.

A draft program of the second week of the 2014 PRC is attached.

For planning purposes, please email ssgm at anu.edu.au<mailto:ssgm at anu.edu.au> if you plan to attend any of the PRC sessions.
