Dear colleagues

Exhibition launch: Embedding encounters

It is my pleasure to invite you to the formal launch of Embedding Encounters.

This exhibition is one of the 2014 collaborative projects enabled by the Vice-Chancellor's College Visiting Artist Fellowship Scheme and the College, and has supported visual artist Dr Nicola Dicksonto work within a multi institutional project initiated by Adjunct Associate Professor Bronwen Douglas.

The project investigates the varied collections assembled during the expedition commanded by Joseph Antoine Bruni d'Entrecasteaux to Tasmania, the Western Pacific Islands and Indonesia in 1791-4.

Dickson's role in this project was to creatively respond to the collection of drawings created by the neo-classical artist, Jean Piron, who accompanied the voyage.

Themes alluded to in the artworks include the role of the body as a site of exchange, display of power and channel of communication; the fact that encounter was a meeting and melding of cultural perceptions; and the driving role of material exchange in initiating many encounters.

Time: 5-6pm
Venue: Foyer, Dean’s Office, HC Coombs Building
