Seminar Abstract
In this presentation I argue that Maori need to continue to 'take back' hapu (sub-tribe) economies, by which I mean continuing to insist on our own languages and ethical frameworks for describing and making decisions about the economy. Current dominant economic models are unsustainable and compromise many hapu economic initiatives.
I use my own hapu Ngati Kea/Ngati Tuara as an example of how hapu scale renewable energy projects can support hapu aspirations and can provide a viable option for hapu to foster local economies. I contrast this example with the story of a Government gold mining Block Offer in the hapu area. I suggest that issues of scale and environmental appropriateness are crucial factors in making decisions about which projects hapu should pursue.
Dr Maria Bargh is a Senior Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington.
