The State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Program (SSGM) in partnership with the Papua New Guinea Canberra Students Association (PNGCSA) are hosting a series of public lectures to mark the 40th anniversary of the Papua New Guinea’s independence.

The theme of the public lectures, as established by members of the PNGCSA, is Embracing Unity: Reflections on the Diversity and Prosperity of Papua New Guinea. The lectures will provide an opportunity for a number of distinguished Papua New Guineans to provide their perspectives on forty years of PNG’s independence, the opportunities and challenges for PNG’s development, and on the role of diversity in shaping PNG’s future.

About the speaker:

His Excellency Mr Charles W Lepani, Papua New Guinea’s High Commissioner to Australia, is one of Papua New Guinea’s longest serving and most eminent public servants. His career began in the 1960s and he was the first Papua New Guinean to head the National Planning Office after Independence. He has served as Director of the Pacific Islands Development Program at the University of Hawai’i and worked as a consultant to both the PNG and Australian Governments. In his diplomatic career, he has represented PNG as the Ambassador to the European Union. Since 2005, he has been the PNG High Commissioner to Australia have been showcased in both Australia and New Zealand.
