Dear colleagues,
Just a note to introduce this new funding initiative through the CAP RSAP program. We should aim to put in one or two bids by the 30 October deadline, and would like to encourage Pacific Institute members to propose bids either individually or collectively for the Institute Board to consider and forward to RSAP (the Board will assist with some of the information requested in the application). Please note that the CI has to be a member of CAP, but there are no other restrictions on involvement from non-CAP members of the Institute. Given that most other regional institutes will also be bidding for this funding, a reasonable ask would be in the order of $10,000 unless a stellar case can be made.
Best regards,
Chris Ballard and Miranda Forsyth
INNOVATIVE PROJECT FUNDING (COMPETITIVE)
There will be an additional pool of funding to contribute to the substantive activities of the non-endowed Regional Institutes.
The funding will be as follows:
Approx. $60,000 TOTAL per annum - for substantive activities (competitive application process)
Regional Institutes can decide to apply for this additional Innovative Project Funding. Funding proposals will be assessed in line with the strategic priorities of the College. Examples of eligible activities would be major workshops or conferences held at the ANU, or visits by distinguished scholars to contribute to such events. Where the activity planned is being held outside the ANU, there should be a clear indication that the ANU is the lead convenor.
For 2016 activities, applications for this additional funding will close on 30 October 2015. Going forward, applications will normally be due in May of the year prior to the event funded (i.e. applications for additional funding for innovative projects in 2017, will be due on 31 May 2016).
There is a limit of two applications per Institute per year, and each application must be endorsed by the Director/Convenor of the respective Regional Institute.
To apply for funding, eligible Institutes or equivalent should submit a two-page proposal outlining the substantive activity for which funding is requested along with an attachment summarising the current financial status of the Institute.
The proposal should address the following:
* Amount of funding requested
* Description of the proposed activity
* Aims and significance of the proposed activity
* Anticipated outcomes and benefits of the proposed activity eg research, outreach, publications
* Justification of funding requested.
The attachment should address the following:
* Current balance of the Institute’s funds (specifying committed and uncommitted funds)
* Details of any external funding for which ANU matching funds are required or desirable.
Selection Criteria
* Academic Quality and potential for enhancing research outcomes within the College
(50%).
* Potential outreach and/or public policy benefits, including ability to secure external funding (30%).
* Planned publications flowing from the activity (20%).
Eligibility and Conditions
* Funding is available to currently active Regional Institutes (however named) based in the
College of Asia & the Pacific that do not have endowed funds.
* An institute is one that has been formally approved by the College Executive and has been (or is in the process of being) approved by the University Research Committee.
* To be eligible for funding, a Regional Institute must have an appropriate management and governance structure.
* Expenditure of the requested funds must be finalised in the calendar year for which the funds have been allocated - funds cannot be carried-over.
Process
* Selection will be made by a sub‐committee of the College research committee, chaired by the Associate Dean (Research).
Application details
* The application deadline for 2016 activities will be 30 Oct 2015. Decisions will be communicated to the Regional Institute Directors/Convenors in the week of 2 Nov 2015.
(For 2017 activities, the application deadline will be 31 May 2016 with decisions communicated to the Regional Institute Directors/Convenors in the following week).
* Regional Institute Directors/Convenors are responsible for submitting their Institutes endorsed applications (up to a maximum of two per Institute).
* These two‐page applications and their supporting documents should be submitted via email to the Project Coordinator, Strategic Partnerships, Ms Christine Sullivan (christine.sullivan at anu.edu.au<mailto:christine.sullivan at anu.edu.au>).
* Questions about eligibility should be directed to the Associate Dean (Research), Professor Renee McKibbin (renee.mckibbin at anu.edu.au<mailto:renee.mckibbin at anu.edu.au>).
