Dear Miranda,
Thanks for giving me the chance to talk to the Pacific Institute. It was exciting to hear about the plans for the remainder of the year, and to learn of the budget you have for initiatives. I would like to encourage you to use some of the resources to archive data sets from Pacific nations.
The Australian Data Archives in the College of Arts and Social Sciences holds a number of survey and census data sets of relevance to researchers working on the Pacific Island nations and territories. These date back to the 1950s and 1960s. They offer unique snapshots of island societies. Though conducted for governmental reports, the information can also be valuable to anthropologists, linguists, sociologists, political scientists and demographers who want to apply novel methods and theories. Students with limited budgets for field surveys often benefit from the opportunities to carry out secondary analysis of surveys covering thousands of respondents. Time does not degrade the value of data, but it does mean that more imagination is needed to frame novel hypotheses and carry out critical analysis.
At the moment very few of the potential data sets are fully archived. The ADA needs resources to do this.
Also, I believe that individual researchers scattered across the campus may hold personal copies of other data sets that ideally should be deposited in the archives. I encourage PI to put collaboration with ADA on the agenda for the rest of 2016.
Have a look at the archive webpages: http://www.ada.edu.au/
- Australian Data Archive - Home<http://www.ada.edu.au/>

Note for former ASSDA users: Access to the ASSDA website has now been closed, and all queries and requests for data are now made through this site.
Please contact the director of the Archive, Dr Steve McEachern, to discuss ways to grow the Pacific Island collection.
Cheers, Terry
