New Caledonia Workshop

The people of New Caledonia are expected to go to the polls in 2018 to determine whether or not to remain within the French Republic. This workshop, presented by the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Program in partnership with the Pacific Institute, will bring together researchers from around Australia and from New Caledonia to discuss some of the key issues facing local political leaders and the New Caledonian population at large in the lead up to the referendum. The workshop will include presentations from both Anglophone and Francophone researchers with various experiences in the field in New Caledonia. Presenters will include Denise Fisher, former Australian Consul-General to New Caledonia and Research Fellow with the ANU Centre for European Studies and Nic Maclellan, a long-time journalist in the Pacific who has covered New Caledonia extensively since the 1980s.
Some of the themes to be addressed include:

  *   Citizenship and identity politics
  *   Women in politics in New Caledonia
  *   The politics of language
  *   Nickel mining and impacts on indigenous communities
  *   Constitutional issues associated with the referendum
  *   Issues of labour market access in New Caledonia
