A major drought and a series of severe frosts associated with El Niño climatic conditions from mid-2015 have caused major disruption to the lives of many rural Papua New Guineans. Major impacts continue in some locations in mid-2016. A summary is given of the effect of the drought and frosts on the supply of drinking water and food, school closures, villagers’ health and the economy. The ways that villagers have responded is summarized, as are responses by government, politicians, the commercial sector, international development partners, churches and non-government organisations. The seminar concludes with suggestions on how to reduce the impact of future events on the lives of rural villagers, considering agricultural and economic issues at the village level as well as response by national and international actors.
