The Plan for
TREES, KNOTS AND OUTRIGGERS
Environmental Knowledge in the Northeast Kula Ring
And the results so far.

Friday 4 August 2017, 3:00pm

TREES, KNOTS AND OUTRIGGERS results from a plan defined between June and August 1991. Then I first went to Taiwan, Kunming/Yunnan and returned to Muyuw in Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea. With a stopover in Canberra I defined a route practiced now for the 14th time. In this presentation I review the plan's initial intent, the wavering courses that resulted in the book, and the next steps the project defines for me. The undertaking initially took shape as a two-part comparative project based on typological affinities between the Melanesia I knew and southwestern China I fancied I would get to know. By the end of the 1990s, however, it morphed into a broadly conceived but narrowly focused cultural analysis of the relationships that might pertain between the reputed Austronesian homeland in southeastern China and a newly defined and understood sector of Melanesia I now understand in the guise of historical ecology. In addition to highlighting what I deem most important about the book, I discuss new material researched and assembled since the book went to press. The book's final, sixth chapter was a reach. What was learned by climbing a bit higher?

The seminar will be followed by a launch of his new book at Fellows Bar, University House (5:00 pm).

Best regards,

Matt
