Dear colleagues,
I'm writing to share the sad news of the passing of Associate Professor Tracey Banivanua-Mar, Pacific scholar and brilliant historian from La Trobe University. She had cancer. Her most recent book was "Decolonisation and the Pacific: indigenous globalisation and the ends of empire" (Cambridge University Press, 2016). Tracey was 42 and had two young children.
Tracey's funeral is at 11am on Friday, August 25th at 75 Reid St. Fitzroy North (Church of Christ Building), Melbourne. All welcome.
Earlier this year, in addition to the passing of Dr. Teresia Teaiwa of Victoria University, and Seiuli Allan Alo Va'ai of the University of the South Pacific, we also lost Reverend Dr. Kambati Uriam, an ANU graduate and historian, and Barbara Hau'ofa, Pacific editor, both also from USP.
It's a sad year for Pacific scholars and scholarship, and an appropriate time to reflect on life, health and wellbeing.
The Australian Association for Pacific Studies will host tributes to these colleagues during the biennial conference, "Two Horizons", April 4-7, 2018 at the University of Adelaide.
thanks,
Katerina
