Dear PI colleagues,

please find below information on the upcoming NOCC event.

---------------------------

The Niu Oceania Cultural Centre (NOCC) is putting on an evening of pacific
food and languages. Come and learn about the history of Oceanic languages,
and try some authentic pacific food!

Date: 19th of April

Time: 18.00

Place: Coombs Tea room

Speakers: Andrew Pawley, Malcolm Ross & Meredith Osmond

Chefs: NOCC

Oceanic languages are part of the Austronesian language family. The spread
of Austronesian languages and speakers over 4,000 years ago in the
Indo-Pacific region represent one of the most remarkable chapters in human
history. The outcome was the largest spread of a well-establish language
family (before western colonisation). The Austronesian language family
stretches all the way from Madagascar to Rapa Nui (Easter Island). In their
work, CHL-linguists Osmond, Pawley & Ross focus on the Oceanic branch of
Austronesian languages, which is a genealogical group consists of languages
spoken all the way from Western Papua to Hawai'i, Aotearoa and Rapa Nui. On
this evening, they will talk about the history of Oceanic languages and
address words for food stuff in particular. Pawley, Ross & Osmond conduct
exciting research in the "The Oceanic Lexicon project" where they try to
reconstruct the language and culture of people who lived in the pacific
3,000 years ago! You can read more about this project on their website:
https://sites.google.com/site/theoceaniclexiconproject/proto-oceanic

After the talk, there will be a pacific food tasting prepared by the
NOCC-crew. So, you will first learn about words for food and food
preparation, and then you can try said food! The Niu Oceania Cultural
Centre (NOCC) is a local Canberra-based community group who work to teach,
disseminate, preserve and enable students to learn the languages, arts,
cultures and values of Oceania.

This event is open to everyone interested in the Pacific, in particular
students & staff at ANU and members of the Pacific Islander community here
in ACT. Please spread this information to others who may be interested.

Please RSVP before the 16th of April if you are keen on the food
tasting. You can RSVP either by contacting niu.oceania.cultural.centre at gm
ail.com or attending the Facebook-event: https://www.facebook.com/event
