Thursday 14 June 2018, 12 noon to 2 pm
Hedley Bull, Room 3.27, SDSC Reading Room
Dr Carine David of the University of New Caledonia is presently a visitor at the Department of Pacific Affairs. In this presentation she will address the key issues surrounding the forthcoming referendum to determine New Caledonia's future political status. In particular, she will be discussing:
· The special nature of the electorate entitled to vote
· The finalisation of the electoral roll (still not complete)
· The question which voters will be asked
· The likely outcome
· The attitude to the referendum of the younger Kanak generation
· The economic ramifications of a yes vote or a no vote
· The aftermath of the referendum
Carine David is from the Département de Droit, Economie et Gestion, University of New Caledonia, and is widely published on the legal implications of New Caledonia's political status.
