I am saddened to report that filmmaker Chris Owen passed away last week, 9 March, in Canberra, after years of battling with the ravages of diabetes. He was 73.
At the end of last year, Chris received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Visual Anthropology for his many films on Papua New Guinea from 1973 until his retirement in 2010. And just last month, Chris received an honorary membership from the Australian Cinematographers’ Society in recognition of his distinguished career.
Chris worked primarily at the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies in Port Moresby and the National Film Institute in Goroka. He directed several New Guinea classics, such as The Red Bowmen, Malangan Labadama, Bridewealth for a Goddess, Man without Pigs, Gogodala—A Cultural Revival?, Betelnut Bisnis, Ramu Pawa, Re-Forestation Naturally, and Tukana—Husat i Asua?
