The establishment of a new network of analysts and academics from universities and research institutes in Australia, China and Pacific Island countries working on Pacific affairs will be discussed at a workshop convened by the Department of Pacific Affairs at ANU on 3 June 2019.
The proposed network is envisaged to promote research collaboration concerning the Pacific, and has the potential to enrich academic debate on a variety of issues. In particular, such a network may result in new perspectives on the growing attention Pacific Island countries are receiving from traditional and new international players. The workshop will provide opportunity for sharing research findings on a range of issues, from elections to extractive industries and economic development.
Speakers from Australia, China and the Pacific will discuss four broad themes: (1) elections, education and governance in the Pacific; (2) natural resources and economic development in the Pacific; (3) traditional and new players in the Pacific, and (4) the Pacific’s role in broader international relations.
