Book Launch by Dame Meg Taylor
Secretary General, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat
['Framing the Islands' and Greg Fry]

Join us for the launch of Framing the Islands: Power and Diplomatic Agency in Pacific Regionalism by author Honorary Associate Professor Greg Fry. The book will be launched by Dame Meg Taylor.

Dame Meg Taylor is Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and is also currently the Pacific Ocean Commissioner. She received her LLB from Melbourne University, and her LLM from Harvard University. She practiced law in Papua New Guinea and served as a member of the Law Reform Commission. From 1989-1994 Dame Meg was Ambassador of Papua New Guinea to the United States, Mexico and Canada in Washington, DC. Prior to taking up her appointment as Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, she was Vice President of the World Bank Group from 1999 to 2013.

Since its origins in late eighteenth-century European thought, the idea of placing a regional frame around the Pacific islands has never been just an exercise in geographical mapping. This framing has always been a political exercise. Contending regional projects and visions have been part of a political struggle concerning how Pacific islanders should live their lives. Framing the Islands tells the story of this political struggle and its impact on the regional governance of key issues for the Pacific such as regional development, resource management, security, cultural identity, political agency, climate change and nuclear involvement. It tells this story in the context of a changing world order since the colonial period and of changing politics within the post-colonial states of the Pacific.

Greg Fry is Honorary Associate Professor in the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy at ANU. He was Academic Co-ordinator of Graduate Studies in Diplomacy and International Affairs at the University of the South Pacific from 2011 to 2015, and Director of Graduate Studies in International Affairs at ANU from 1988 to 2011. His research focuses on the international politics and diplomacy of the South Pacific region. His recent publications include The New Pacific Diplomacy (co-edited with Sandra Tarte- ANU Press, 2015)..
