Call for Papers and Panel Proposals

Sorcery Accusation Related Violence: the Harm and the Healing

Divine Word University, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea
11-13 June 2020

Witchcraft and sorcery accusations and related violence (SARV) and other harmful practices are of significant concern in Papua New Guinea and across the world.  There is growing national and international consensus that the issue involves serious human rights abuses and requires urgent action<https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/evj7zw/witchcraft-related-violence-un>.  This conference is an opportunity for those within PNG and across the globe to come together to share experiences, insights and positive practices to overcome violence and other harmful practices associated with beliefs in sorcery and witchcraft.  The main themes of the conference are expected to be:

v  Sharing initiatives in addressing and preventing SARV and other harmful practices associated with witchcraft beliefs
v  Responding to the needs of survivors, including questions of repatriation
v  Exploring particular impacts of SARV and other harmful practices associated with beliefs in sorcery and witchcraft (for example its impact on children)
v  Identifying factors, institutions or groups that catalyse or drive SARV
v  Debating the role of the state in addressing SARV, particularly what has been learned about implementation of PNG's National Action Plan on Sorcery Accusation Related Violence or other national approaches

Limited travel bursaries and financial support is available (especially for "front line" organisations and individuals), so please indicate in your application if you wish to apply for this.
