Remaking and renewing practices and skills
The annual PAA-E meeting is to coincide with the exhibition A Sea of Islands – Masterpieces from Oceania (21 February – 23 August 2020) held at the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden, the Netherlands. This year’s meeting entitled Remaking and Renewing Practices and Skills centres around the role of cultural institutions and practitioners in documenting, remaking and renewing practices and skills in the Pacific and among Pacific diasporas. The making of exhibitions and the collections research involved, can create new ideas that inspire the development of new practices in the Pacific and elsewhere. In this conference we also want to pay special attention to grassroots documentation and musealisation ideas that spring from Pacific communities and to their impact on current skills. Finally the contemporary debate around virtual and actual return of material culture continues to shape museological practices, programmes and policies. All these issues might impact the creation and revaluation of new Pan Pacific identities.
We therefore welcome papers dealing with the following topics:
* Exhibition making
* Collections research
* Virtual or actual return
* Grassroots documentation and musealisation projects
* Pan Pacific art identities
* Current research
There will be two types of presentations:
* 30 min paper (20-25 min talk, 5-10 min discussion)
* 10 min report
Please submit your 100 to 200 word abstract to Maria op de Laak (maria.opdelaak at wereldculturen.nl<mailto:maria.opdelaak at wereldculturen.nl>) by 15 March 2020. Acceptance will be confirmed by 23 March 2020.
The PAA-E meeting will precede the 10th anniversary of the waka project on 1 and 2 May 2020. Delegates are welcome to join in on the festivities.
Soon more information will be available regarding hotels, conference dinner and programme.
