Although the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has been in existence for nearly 60 years, it only established a presence in the Pacific region as recently as 2017. In this presentation, Mike will take us through the governance, operating modalities and resourcing of WFP, before throwing light on the organisation's particular role in the context of Pacific Island countries and territories. This includes preparedness and response to natural disasters, together with meeting logistic and communication challenges.
Mike Sackett trained as an Agricultural Economist and worked for Governments in Vanuatu and PNG before joining the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation in Tanzania working as an advisor in the Ministry of Agriculture. He then moved to the World Food Programme, the food aid agency of the UN, where he spent the next 22 years working in a variety of countries ranging from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. WFP's activities today principally focus on providing emergency relief for victims of conflict and natural disasters such as cyclones, drought and earthquakes. WFP also supports development in sectors such as primary education, forestry and labour-intensive public works.
