In this presentation, Maleli Qera will discuss his important work with C3 - Community Centred Conservation - a grassroots community organisation in the Pacific Islands. C3 commenced pilot projects on Kia Island, Fiji, as it was representative of many remote coastal communities in the Pacific Islands, facing challenges such as deforestation, lack of reliable electricity and water, over fishing, exploitation of endangered species, coral bleaching, and an increase in storm surges and coastal erosion. In partnership with the local communities of Kia, C3 created inspiration for environmental stewardship by building awareness and capacity. The success of these pilot projects, like school-based environment education programs, solar energy, fuel-efficient stoves, and creating awareness about habitat and fisheries monitoring, has allowed for efforts to be extended to another ten communities. C3 has also assisted in the establishment of local businesses to supplement incomes for rural communities.

Maleli Qera is from Koro Island in Fiji and has come from a secondary teaching background. He has been working for the C3 organisation, Fiji, since its establishment in the Pacific Islands in 2010. Maleli is now starting his own organisation, Oceans of Hope, which aims to provide support for young mothers from rural Fijian communities to build their confidence and encourage them to complete their school education to improve outcomes for their children.
