About the event
On 5 May 1998, a decolonisation process in New Caledonia was initiated through the Noumea Accord – a framework agreement between the French State and political parties representing supporters and opponents of independence. Twenty-five years on, following three referendums on self-determination, there remain fundamental differences over New Caledonia’s political status, despite renewed dialogue in Paris in April.

Drawing on recent interviews in New Caledonia, journalist Nic Maclellan will assess the significant social and economic changes in the French Pacific dependency under the Noumea Accord. The seminar will discuss the French government’s latest timetable for change within the French Republic, contrasted with the ongoing call for an independent and sovereign state by the Front de Libération Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS) and other independence supporters.

Following the April 2023 visit to Noumea by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the seminar will also discuss the revitalised France-Australia strategic partnership, the support of Australia’s Melanesian neighbours for an independent New Caledonia, and looming tensions in the lead up to the May 2024 provincial elections.
