<p class="MsoNormal"><span class="normaltextrun"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Segoe UI",sans-serif;color:black">Climate variability can impact the livelihoods of Pacific Island people. Incorporating new climate science knowledge offers hope in
developing sustainable adaptation strategies. Join Scott Power in this presentation where he will describe the characteristics, causes, predictability and prospects of naturally occurring decadal climate variability and near-term climate change, and the impact
climate change has on year-to-year variability. He will outline implications of the frequency of record-breaking high temperatures projected over the coming decades, which includes rates in the western Pacific that are among the highest in the world. Scott
will then discuss a project he co-managed, aimed at increasing community benefits from Early Warning/Early Action Systems in the Solomon Islands.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

is the Director of the Centre for Applied Climate Sciences at the University of Southern Queensland, a climate science advisor to the DFA-funded Australia Pacific Climate Partnership, and an associate investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate
Extremes. An expert in climate change and climate variability through his 20+ years of experience working in leading research roles for the Bureau of Meteorology. Scott was also the climate science advisor to the Australian Government’s Climate Change Authority
2018-2021.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

innovative and transformative research, and the 2019 Pacific Meteorological Council’s Innovation and Research Award “in recognition of outstanding, innovative and exceptional climate change and climate variability research”.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
