Hi all,
Here is some stuff that is happening in the new season
that you might be interested in.
Open Day (Sunday 22nd September 12pm)
The Club will be holding an Open Day from 12 noon with
a free BBQ at the clubhouse. This will be a good
opportunity for members to practice, check that they
remember how to rig the boats and meet other members.
Feel free to invite anybody you know who maybe
interested. For more information contact Lisa Bambic
bambic_jo@yahoo.com.au .
Clubhouse Opening
Clubhouse keys will be available from the SRA from
Monday 23rd September.
Tuross Trip
Following the success of the trip to Tuross at the
start of the year the club is going back on the
weekend of October 12-13. Tuross is a great spot with
camping right next to the beach as well as a sheltered
lake for sailing. The trip is designed as a chance to
go away without racing so members regardless of
sailing experience can either enjoy the constant
coastal winds or just relax on the sand. Once again
the club will be subsidising the trip! If your
interested send me an email
g.larkin@austarmetro.com.au .
Hawaiian Shirt (19th-20th October)
Basically this is a uni regatta racing trailable
yachts on Sydney Harbor. If your interested send me an
email g.larkin@austarmetro.com.au.
Safety
The ANUSC now has a safety guide which is available on
the club webpage
http://student.anu.edu.au/clubs/Sailing_Club/ or on
the walls of the clubhouse. All members should read
this guide because it contains common sense safety
information about sailing. Although there are few
major injuries due to sailing in Canberra it is
important to be aware of safety. Last year for example
there were several cases of hypothermia and one case
of dehydration which required hospitalisation for 3
days. Probably the best advice is to sail with friends
so that you can watch out for each other.
Did you know?
* The major safety hazard on Lake Burley Griffin is
hypothermia.
* Yarralumla Bay is so sheltered that the wind speed
could double once you leave the bay.
* Phone numbers for the Water Police and other
Canberra Sailing Clubs are on the Clubhouse phone.
* Water Police only operate from 9am - 4pm.
* If there are breaking white waves on the water the
wind is above 15kn or 30km/h and only experienced
sailors should go sailing.
cheers
Garrick Larkin
