Hi all,

Tonight (Tuesday 2nd Dec) is the first day of the Tuesday twilight series run by the YMCA Sailing Club although there will be an experienced ANU sailor to open the clubhouse and assist you. Get down to the ANU Sailing Club between 5:15 and 5:30 to be on the water by 6pm.

No pressure to race.

You don't have to race if you turn up to twilights. If you don't want to race this is an opportunity to sail in a supervised environment where there is somebody to help you rig and lift the boat into the water and help you out if you get into trouble.

Learn to skipper!

Twilights is designed for beginners who have just learnt to sail. Many of the competitors only just completed their beginners course and are still practicing the basic techniques. This means that you will be racing against beginners who are practicing the basic skills not experts training for an important regatta. It doesn't even matter if you don't finish or even make it across the start line because there will be other beginners having just as much trouble as you and every time you try you will learn more.

Anybody can be a crew!

Although many ANUSC members consider that they lack the skills to race, crewing in a race is nothing to be concerned about. For example some of the Melbourne University crews had not even stepped on a sailing boat before the first race of this years University Championships! If you have an experienced skipper the greatest requirement for a crew is that they are the correct weight. This is why whenever a regatta is advertised ALL club members are welcome to attend as crews. In many class if selecting a crew my only concerns would be that they can swim and are the right weight.

I guess what Im saying is that racing is nothing to be scared of and twilights is a good chance to learn among beginners.
